The Arlington Historical Society, in collaboration with Cherrydale-Columbia Masonic Lodge 42, is again sponsoring the Annual History Essay Contest to encourage student writing about the history of Arlington. This year’s contest honors former AHS Board Member Charlie Clark who passed away in 2023. A noted Arlington journalist and author, Charlie had a great Arlington story. His journalism career began as a reporter for the Yorktown High School newspaper. His article on baseball came from firsthand experience playing baseball at Barcroft Park. Many of the stories he told as a journalist and author showed his love of Arlington.

In his honor, this year we ask our student writers to share their Arlington story using the following prompts:

  • What is your Arlington story?
  • Some have lived in Arlington your entire life.
  • Many are from different countries or parts of the USA.
  • How did you and your family end up in Arlington and what has been your personal experience living here?

Tell us your Arlington story and include experiences that bring Arlington and your personal history to life.

This contest is open to Arlington students in grades 8-12. The deadline for submission of the essay is May 31, 2024. Financial prizes are awarded for the winning essays. If you have any questions, please email Cathy Hix (APScathy@gmail.com) or info@arlingtonhistoricalsociety.org .
