The Arlington Historical Society is helping Glencarlyn, one of Arlington’s oldest neighborhoods, celebrate the centennial of the first public library, which opened in 1924. This was not a county library–they wouldn’t get started until 1937. Glencarlyn’s public library (see photo below) was made possible by Samuel S. Burdett (see photo at  right) who gave his entire book collection to the community and a fund to help maintain it.

The Glencarlyn Library Centennial will be QUITE THE CELEBRATION, with fun, FREE activities, food and games for the entire family. The event begins at 12:00 noon IN Glencarlyn Library with a Scavenger Hunt and Book Making Tables for the children and Visual Displays and Oral Historical Discussion for the Adults.

Dr Mark Benbow, of the Arlington Historical Society, will speak about the Library and Glencarlyn over the years. The Library Community Garden will have an Open House.

We will have a Video Corner to permanently preserve your stories and memories about our Library, and Story Boards to post your notes and thoughts.

The official, and brief, Rededication Ceremony and cake cutting will be at 1:00 pm, with members of our County Board participating. Light refreshments will be served.

Following the ceremony, the celebration will spill out into the Library Garden and onto the grounds of Carlin Hall for a 1920’s-themed Country Fair. There will tents, activities, games, music and food including hot dogs, popcorn and cotton candy!  All based on the roaring 1920’s and ALL FREE and open to the community, library supporters, and patrons.
