Northern Virginia Heritage is a sequel to Eleanor Lee Templeman’s Arlington HeritageIt is a well-documented and thoroughly illustrated compendium with co-author Nan Netherton. The subtitle is: A Pictorial Compilation of the Historic Sites and Homes in the Counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Fauquier, Prince William, and Stafford, and he cities of Alexandria and Fredericksburg. 

This book is out of print. All copies will show wear.

The authors devote 12 pages to historic images and description of sites in Arlington County. But if you want to know more about the surrounding Virginia region, then, this is the book for you. “A splendid panoramic view, with carefully selected illustrations and captions that disentangle fact from tradition, of the upper regions of Virginia’s historic Northern Neck.”

Eleanor lee Templeman, had deep roots in Virginia although she was born in Washington, D.C. and spent her formative years in California. She was the great-great granddaughter of Richard Bland Lee, first Congressman from Northern Virginia. She was also the direct descendant of Mayor John Roberts of Alexandria who hosted Pierre Lafayette when he visited Alexandria in 1824. She came to Arlington in 1935. She and her husband lived in Arlington starting in 1950 until her death in 1990. She extensively researched Arlington’s history to present a history of Arlington’s interesting past.  She was a founding member of the Arlington Historical Society in 1956.

Nan Netheron moved to Fairfax in 1951. She served as an officer of the member of the board of directors of the Firfax county Federation of Citizens’ Association. In 1957 she won the Washington Evening Star’s trophy for “Citizen of the year” for compiling a directory of of civic and governmental organizations together with a map. In 1965 she lead the preparation of civic, governmental, literary, and art organizations in Fairfax County and Alexandria illustrated with previously unpublished prints and drawings of historical landmarks.
