Due to Hurricane Florence and its impact on the travel of our panelists we are postponing this event to October 11.
The Virginia State Supreme Court ruled that Arlington’s African-American children could legally attend white schools beginning on February 2, 1959. However, this was only the first step in ultimately desegregating the entire Arlington County public school system. The right for these children to participate in sports was a much longer battle that played out in state government, PTA meetings, and around many family dinner tables over time.
This intriguing and heart-warming conversation about the desegregation of Arlington County interscholastic sports will feature men and women who represent Hoffman-Boston, Wakefield, and Washington-Lee High School Athletics. The panel discussion will be moderated by former Pittsburgh Steeler and two-time Super Bowl Champion Reggie Harrison, a Washington-Lee graduate.
The program is free and open to the public. It will take place in the Reinsch Library auditorium on the Main Campus of Marymount University. Doors will open at 6:00 pm for those interested in viewing the exhibit on APS Sports. Light refreshments will be served in the library reception area.
This event is part of a monthly series of public programs sponsored by the Arlington Historical Society and Marymount University’s Department of History and Politics and is in partnership with the Black Heritage Museum of Arlington.
