APS Desegregation: A 60th Anniversary Tribute

Stratford-Commemoration-FlyerJoin APS, community members, former students, and special guests on Mon, Feb. 4 to remember those who desegregated Stratford Jr. High and Arlington Public Schools in February of 1959. Arrive at 6 p.m. to explore artifacts and art;the formal presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m. The event will take place in the H-B Woodlawn Auditorium. (4100 Vacation Lane.)

Arlington Public Art, in partnership with the County’s Historic Preservation Program, is collaborating with visiting print maker Amos Kennedy to create a commemorative print that honors the 60th anniversary of the desegregation of Stratford Junior High School (now Dorothy Hamm Middle School). Kennedy creates prints, posters and postcards from handset wood and metal type, oil-based inks, and eco-friendly and affordable chipboard. Many of the posters are inspired by proverbs, sayings, and quotes he has researched. His working method often involves overprinting multiple layers of text, resulting in no two prints being truly identical.
